Garbo’s Butter Austin with the opening of a long awaited lobster shack


Austin residents who feel rushed to have their favorite tenderloin in Maine don’t have to feel seashells indulging in the city’s brand new lobster restaurant.

Here to butter yourself with all the sweet lobster meat you can squeeze a claw to: Garbo’s Fresh Maine LobsterThe new brick-and-mortar location, which officially opened to the public, nearly two years after the company was granted space at 12709 N. Mopac Expressway.

The family-run, managed restaurant is the savory creation of Connecticut girl and lobster boat Heidi Garbo, who first started a similar concept in the Florida Keys. After moving to Austin, she opened Garbo’s as a food truck, then added another truck, then another (and a few pop-ups) before she and her two sisters served their East Coast love of lobster shacks in the form of a restaurant.

Garbo’s first brick-and-mortar location, which opened in 2014 in Wells Branch, closed last October in anticipation of the opening of the North Mopac cabin, which was initially required to offer only take-out and curbside pick-up services due to the pandemic. The new lobster shack is now Garbo’s only brick and mortar location, making it a big fish in the little pond of outstanding seafood restaurants in Austin.

Garbo’s replaces what was once the Opal Divine location in northwest Austin, which closed in 2019, and the building has been completely renovated to include dining for up to 210 people in the vast interior and private space of the dining room, the exterior patio, the living room and the bar.

“The past two years have been the most difficult years I have ever had in running a restaurant,” says Garbo. “The hits kept coming. We just opened limited indoor restaurants this spring, a full year after the renovations. Now, with the private dining room open, it finally feels like we can celebrate the courage that brought us here.

The new shellfish station will serve all the East Coast seafood specialties landlocked Austinites crave, from classic Maine and Connecticut lobster rolls to ocean-big fish and chips, a mouth-watering selection of oysters. fresh and raw sea bass offerings, crab cakes, fish dip, lobster mac and cheese, lobster grilled cheese and – oh yes – steamed whole Maine lobster.

The drink menu, curated by Beverage Director Josh Loving of Small Victory, includes wine, beer, and beach cocktails perfect for virtually transporting diners to a beach resort, like the Blue Hawaii Wine Cooler, the cocktail at Garbo’s Grog tap centered on rum, Long Island cocktail and Garbo’s Red Snapper Bloody-Mary-esque.

This New England cuisine with a twist of Austin is about as fresh as you can get in Texas, with Garbo’s flight in 100% sweet Maine lobster meat from East Coast waters. And given that the brand has served over 60,000 lobster sammies to grateful Austinites since 2015, we’d say Garbo is on a roll.

Starting Thursday, November 4, Garbo’s will open early for weekend brunch, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Friday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. at 9 p.m. Sunday. And lobster lovers who want to treat themselves to a spectacular festive meal are also in luck, as the restaurant will be open for service on Christmas Day this year.
