When architect Richard Bradford first custom designed the distinctive triangular dormers for this house, he only installed four. When he saw how beautiful they looked, however, he decided to jump for four more, and so was born the original cabin that stands today. Built with cedar shingles and a metal roof, the ranch-style home is one of five 800-square-foot cabins that will form a community still under construction in Southwest Harbor, a small town on the south side of Mount Island. Desert of Maine. .
The less than 1,000 square foot home makes the most of its size with vaulted ceilings striped with hemlock beams and wide custom milled pine floors that make each room feel more spacious. But not all design choices are based on form and function – several accents are there just for fun. The mezzanine above the main living room, for example, sports a balustrade with wavy pins and a Jackson Pollock-finished hardwood floor (covered in paint splatters). The starburst style light with conical shades that illuminates the area below is another playful fixture, spreading out between the kitchen and the sofa and uniting the two areas from above.
The only difficulty in seeing this adorable island home is that, from the olive green cabinets and the bright red sofa to the plank pine walls, it’s already perfectly assembled. The good news? For $ 460,000, everything can be yours, furniture included.
